The Dominican-American Institute Celebrates the Graduation of Its School of Languages

Three ceremonies brought together 319 graduates from the Playful Learning, Juniors, and Adults programs, representing different campuses across the country.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Instituto Cultural Domínico Americano (ICDA) held three graduation ceremonies for its School of Languages on October 29 and 30, 2026, at the Patrick N. Hughson Auditorium on its main campus.

During the ceremonies, 319 graduates from the Playful Learning, Juniors, and Adults programs were recognized. Participants in the Juniors and Adults programs ranged in age from 13 to 65, demonstrating that learning a new language can begin at different stages of life.

In his welcoming remarks, ICDA Executive Director Enrique Fernández Malla highlighted the graduates’ effort, perseverance, and growing confidence throughout their studies. Of the members of this graduating class, 102 began learning English through Playful Learning, the institution’s program for children, while 114 transferred to a different campus at some point in their academic journey in order to continue their studies.

“The greatest achievement tonight is not that you know more words in English. It is that today you have more confidence in what you are capable of doing,” Fernández Malla said.

He also noted that, although artificial intelligence tools can translate a conversation in seconds, they do not replace confidence, judgment, or the ability to build human connections. In that regard, he encouraged the graduates to use technology to expand their talent and continue developing their skills.

The executive director also reminded the audience that, in January 2027, the Instituto Cultural Domínico Americano will celebrate its 80th anniversary as an educational and cultural bridge between the Dominican Republic and the United States. At the conclusion of his message, he invited the graduates to continue learning, take advantage of the new opportunities that English proficiency provides, and help others move forward.

“Today you receive a diploma. But, more importantly, you take with you a stronger voice, a broader perspective, and the responsibility to use both to build a better future,” he said.

The remarks on behalf of the faculty were delivered by Ashley Arias Polanco during the two ceremonies held on October 29, and by Frank Henríquez Santana during the ceremony held on October 30.

The presentation of diplomas and recognitions included the participation of Robert Valcin, director of the School of Languages.

The ceremonies also featured artistic performances by the Domínico Americano Mixed Choir, under the direction of Viterbo Peña.

With these graduation ceremonies, the Instituto Cultural Domínico Americano reaffirms its commitment to English-language instruction that strengthens communication skills, expands academic and professional opportunities, and contributes to the development of human capital in the Dominican Republic.
